What makes one IVF estimate different from another
Two couples at the same clinic can pay very different amounts, and it is rarely because one is getting better care. The variables are medical.
- Stimulation protocol and the medication dose your body needs — usually the largest single variable.
- Whether fertilisation is done by IVF or by ICSI.
- Whether embryos are frozen, and for how long they are stored.
- Whether a frozen embryo transfer is done in a later cycle.
- Additional tests or procedures such as genetic testing or surgical sperm retrieval.
- Scans and blood tests through the cycle for monitoring.

- Can you tell me the IVF cost over the phone?
- Not honestly. Until your reports are reviewed, any figure quoted is a guess. What can be shared upfront is exactly which items make up the estimate, so nothing comes as a surprise.
- Is IVF cheaper if we do ICSI or not?
- ICSI adds to the laboratory cost, but it is advised only when the sperm parameters or a previous fertilisation failure make it necessary — not by default.
- Do medicines cost extra?
- Medication is a real and significant part of the total, and the dose depends on your age and ovarian reserve. It is shown separately in your estimate rather than folded into one number.
- What if the first cycle does not work?
- A frozen embryo transfer from the same cycle, where embryos are available, costs considerably less than a full fresh cycle. That possibility is discussed with you upfront.
